Shingon-shū Buzan-school Grand Head Temple Gokokuji Lighting work in the Gekkō-den Hall was completed on 20 November 2021.This lighting was designed and constructed by Suiundo, and is based on the design of the lighting installed at the Ōmido Hall of the Tsukuba-san Betsuin, the grand head temple of the Shingon-shū Buzan school. The crest of the Tokugawa family, the hollyhock crest, and the tsunagi-kokonotsume crest, which originated from Gokokuji Temple, are incorporated into the openwork design of the lampshade. The tsunagi-kokonotsume crest originates from Keishōin (the mother of Tsunayoshi, the fifth shogun of the Tokugawa shogunate), who vowed to build Gokokuji Temple.
Gekkoden was originally the Nikkoin guest hall of the Mii-dera Temple (Onjōji Temple, Shiga Pref.), which was relocated here.In the early Showa period, it was relocated to Gokokuji Temple and renamed Gekkoden. This historic architecture, built during the Momoyama period, has been designated as a national important cultural property.
Until then, the lighting was bland square lamps, but with the addition of elegant original lamps from Suiundo, the atmosphere of the tatami room became more refined, creating a space befitting a historic architecture.
